On Monday 22 December, former dictator Reynaldo Bignone, together with three other people, was condemned to jail sentence for the abduction of babies during the military dictatorship in 1976 to 1983.

Besides Reynaldo Bignone, also the military doctor Norberto Atilio Bianco, the ex-general Santiago Omar Riveros and obstetrician Luisa Yolanda Arroche de Sala García were condemned. They are accused of the kidnapping of at least eight babies, born in the military hospital of Campo de Mayo base.

The fifth suspect, Doctor Eugenio Martin, was acquitted.

The verdict of last Monday, gave Riveros a punishment of life sentence and Bignone 25 years in jail, for dealing specifically with the kidnapping of babies and being responsible for holding and hiding babies. In Riveros´ case, we’re talking about four and Bignone´s case there were two babies..

For the same crime Dr Bianco got 13 years and Sala García seven, for falsifying birth certificates. Those were necessary, so other couples could raise the babies as if the were theirs..

The grandmothers or ‘Abuelas’ of the Plaza de Mayo acted as the plaintiff in this case.
