The Recoleta Cemetery, one of the must-see tourist attractions in Buenos Aires, announced that it is going to charge foreigner visitors with an entrance fee to fund the preservation of the well known cemetery.

The cemetery is going to charge AR$ 100 to foreigners during the high season only (from September to March.)

The money that will be collected will be used to organise and modernise guided tours and visits. Money will also be invested in making the area nicer by doing some gardening, restoring sculptures and adding more benches to the grounds for people to sit on.

The Recoleta cemetery is one of the most recognisable places in Buenos Aires. It has over 6,400 statues, coffins, crypts and sarcophagi that commemorate many of Argentina’s most celebrated people.

The cemetery houses the tomb of Eva Peron (Evita) as well as the tombs and mausoleums of the Paz Family, Rufina Cambaceres and Liliana Crociati.

The cemetery is open daily from 08.00 to 18.00. You can join a free tour in English on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11.00.
