Buenos Aires to Host the 2018 Youth Olympics

From 6 till 18 October 2018, Buenos Aires will host the third Summer Youth Olympic Games. Young athletes from 200 countries worldwide will come to the Argentine capital. Promoted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), 4800 athletes from 15 till 18 years old will battle in different sports categories. During two weeks, 185 events will take place in 26 different sports. Various sports venues such as the new Olympic Village in Villa Soldati will host the event. The Olympic Games are expected to leave a positive impact on the city of Buenos Aires.

The games will take place at the Olympic Park in Parque Roca which is at the heart of the city’s new Sports District. The development is part of the extensive regeneration programme in the south of Buenos Aires, which includes the design, technology and arts areas in Barracas, Parque Patricios, and La Boca respectively; as well as the city’s plans to urbanize less developed neighborhoods and provide access to economic, proper and sustainable housing.

About 112 million US dollar will be invested in sporting, residence and community infrastructure for the Olympic Park. The investment will provide residence for more than 2000 Argentinean families after the Youth Olympics, and improve the surroundings of the neighborhoods. This includes new public transport facilities and the extension of current public transport connections. On top of that, a brand new stadium with Olympic swimming competition pool with connecting concert and marketplace.
