New “Red Subte” System in Buenos Aires to protect commuters from rising transportation costs

The costs for public transportation in Buenos Aires are rising. According to Transportation Minister Guillermo Dietrich, the fares of transport services within the City of Buenos Aires, as well as for the operators of the routes in the Greater Buenos Aires area will raise in February 2018.

To protect commuters in Buenos Aires, the new Red SUBTE system will be implemented. People who take the train, bus, and subway in Buenos Aires regularly and also have to switch between multiple services to get to their destination, will now receive a discount. With the Red SUBTE system, no matter which means of transportation a person takes, within a two-hour period they will receive a cheaper fare after the first one.

According to the Minister, commuters will pay the full fare of the first ride they take, and then gradually receive an increasing discount on further rides: 50% discount on the second fare, 75% on the third and all following fares. To get the discounts, the time between the departure times of your rides needs to be below 2 hours, whereas the actual time you spend commuting on a bus, train etc, won’t be counted.

Paying with the SUBTE Card, the discount will automatically be applied.
